You Are Crazy If You Don't Do This

I preach about cloud based computer back up, and people ignore me all of the time with the following excuses:

1. I have a back up hard drive.
2. I have a raided hard drive.
3. I have time machine on my Mac.

Yeah listen to what has happened to me and see how that is not a great full proof solution. I have had multiple disappearances of an entire wedding on my computer. I downloaded all files to a 3TB external drive, backed them up on another 1TB portable drive, and shipped the portable to ProImage Editors for editing. The drive never made it and had to get another drive to ship them. Only then did I discover that the files were missing on my 3TB external drive due to a virus.

Great. So much for back ups. Jumped on my cloud based storage system that I pay less than $8 a month to back up my entire computer and three external drives. Download the entire wedding again, make a copy to a portable, and ship it off. They come back just before the cruise, and I download them to my 3TB external again.

I come back to find out that someone had left a glass of something on the new portable while I was away. The condensation ran down the glass, into a vent in the drive housing, and that thing is gone now. No problem because I have the edited files on my external now and I can start the lengthy upload process of all 1000 files to the clients galleries on SmugMug.

But in the process of the upload, the 3TB hard drive failed. At this point I am screaming, ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!

I am able to get the drive replaced under warranty with Western Digital. I have now downloaded the edited files from the cloud based solution once more and we are uploading again. In short they have saved this wedding twice.

Do yourself a favor. Spend $8 and protect your entire computer, plus whatever portable and external drives you have attached no matter how many. Don't be cheap. Be smart. Get Live Drive now.
