Hasselblad Enters Mirrorless World - at $6,500....

OK this little move by Hasselblad makes that new Sony RX-1 look even more attractive. Why? Because this new foray into mirrorless territory by high end medium format camera manufacturer Hasselblad, is basically a Sony Nex-7 in Fancy clothes.

The RX-1 is a full frame sensor mirrorless at $2,800.

This camera from Hassy is using the Sony 24mp APS-C sensor (cropped sensor). Yep. Sony made that sensor and it is sitting in a much cheaper NEX-7 right now. The lenses are all Sony lenses as well. Both E and A mount lenses can be mounted, although an A mount lens requires and adapter. Even the electronic viewfinder is stripped out of a Sony mirrorless.

So what do you get for the additional thousands upon thousands of dollars? A really sweet looking handgrip that comes in wood, carbon fiber, or leather. Saweet!

In response to criticism, Hasselbald reports that the sensor has been modified, although exactly how is not clear. In addition, they claim that they are using much more expensive materials. For example, the body is machined from a piece of aluminum that takes 5 hours alone. Only 4 or 5 are made each day.

I can't be too hard on them. If Nikon Users (or insert your favorite brand here) were offered a repackaged D800 with fancy wood grips, a carbon fiber body, and come complete with gold plated buttons and dials for $2800 more, there would be some that buy it.
