Combat Photojournalist Air Force Staff Sergeant Jonathan Snyder grabbed the above pic while on a training exercise in Afghanistan. He had the guy in the shot basically hold as still as he could while he lit him from the front with a tactical light. The camera, a D4 has just been plopped down in the sand, set on a timer, and a 20 second exposure is grabbed. However, because the light difference between the stars in the background, and the tactical light, Snyder only lit his subject for about 2 seconds during the entire 20 second exposure.
We had done an article on military photographers a year ago,
listed here, and they are the ultimate in cool as far as I am concerned. Not only do they cary around photo kits with high end Nikon cameras, receive 2 months of training on photography including composition and natural lighting techniques, but they receive combat training and carry modified M4 rifles and M9 pistols.
